The Scottish International Education Trust is looking for two new trustees to join its board. If you would be interested in sharing your skills and expertise with SIET, please take a look at the advert linked to at the end of this post.

SIET is a Trust and trustees have certain legal responsibilities relating to the management of its reserves, and to ensuring our actions are compliant with relevant legislation. While these responsibilities are important, they are not generally speaking burdensome.

SIET trustees also have responsibilities in the following areas:

  • The board is quite active with trustees taking on various operational tasks to ensure the continued success of the organisation

  • We have recently organised the board into teams or two or three trustees. These are: Finance and Operations; Communications; Fundraising; Fellow Relations; Awards

  • The board has set itself ambitious fundraising targets and applicants with a professional background in this area are very much encouraged to apply

  • SIET has been working on improving its connections to its former recipients - known as fellows - and applicants whose professional experience speaks to this are also very welcome

  • As part of that process, we are also very keen to have more fellows join the board and take a role in building the trust's future

  • SIET takes very seriously its commitment to opening opportunities for transformative international experiences to those who would not otherwise have the opportunity, and applicants with professional expertise in educational social mobility or widening access and participation are also extremely welcome

  • While SIET is fortunate to benefit from the work of a part-time director, many operational tasks fall to trustee. These might include maintaining social media activity, organising events, managing financial processes, liaising with potential donors, aligning our approach to giving with best practice, and so on. Trustees who are happy to 'get their hands dirty' helping out in the running of the organisation are very welcome.

The board has four hybrid meetings a year and typically undertakes a longer summer planning session somewhere in the Central Belt. We currently have trustees based outwith Scotland, both in the rest of the UK and internationally, and this is not an obstacle to joining the board.

Our current trustees have different levels of previous experience in governance roles, and we see that as a strength. Those with extensive experience of board membership are, of course, very welcome but we are also happy to hear from those who may be at an earlier stage in the journey.

SIET is committed to expanding participation and supporting ways for new and marginalised voices to be heard in society. It is at the core of how we make awards and we try to reflect that in our operational and governance activities. As a result, we are very keen to receive applications from historically marginalised groups and from individuals who may face obstacles to participation in roles such as this.

A full role description, more information about SIET, details of how to apply, and information on how to arrange an informal chat with the chair are all given in the listing linked to below.

We would love to hear from you, and good luck!
